Expectations
Commitment to crew is not one to be taken lightly. This is not just another club to join
that will look good on your resume – if you are thinking of joining because you think
rowing will look good on your application to law school or because you want to get into
shape quickly, please find another club. There are hundreds of other organizations on
campus that will fit both those needs. Rowing, by its very nature, demands sacrifice.
Being a member of the University of Chicago Crew requires that you be a student-
athlete in both senses of the word, that is, being as dedicated to your practice time and
your races as you are to your classes and your midterms. That being said, skipping
practice or races for other commitments is not an option. Understand that once you
choose to become a member of this crew, you are expected to participate in all activities
of the crew team to your fullest extent. No exceptions. While this may sound daunting, it
isn’t as scary as it sounds. All our current oarsmen are able to balance academics, crew,
and other activities on campus, while remaining competitive and successful students and
oarsmen. Finding fulfillment through your dedication to both this sport and your
teammates can, and will become one of the most important and formative experiences
that you can have in college – if you let it. As long as you have the drive to succeed, and
the dedication to learn from every single stroke at every single practice, then this is a
sport that will support you as you grow and learn through your time here at UChicago.
